Simple Old School Salad with Creamy Vinaigrette
This simple old school salad with creamy vinaigrette is so easy and delicious. It named it this, because this recipe just reeks of my grandparents. Just simple ingredients and a little time. Not along that goes into making this. It’s just a head of iceberg lettuce, a tomato, purple onion and this extremely easy vinaigrette dressing. I’ve made this so many times that I feel like I have it down to an art. Read along to see how I whip up this easy salad in no time.

Equipment You’ll Need…
My granny used to keep her salad mix in this big old school plastic container. (She probably still does.) It was this Kelly green color with a frosted white plastic lid. It had to be from the 60s or 70s. Haha I have linked some more modern looking ones below. But other than that, you’ll need a big bowl to serve your salad out of and I used my Pyrex 2 cup measuring cup. I felt like it was super easy to make the dressing in.
Ingredients You’ll Need…
This simple old school salad with creamy vinaigrette is really good. So, obviously the big deal of this recipe is the vinaigrette. You’ll probably have most of the ingredients already at your house. I try to keep some fresh lemons on hand, and I’ve been using the past couple of weeks for this salad! The rest is just typical pantry staples…
Dressing:
- Juice of a whole Lemon
- 1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1 tbsp White Vinegar
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 2 tsp Italian Seasoning
- 1 1/2 tbsp Granulated Sugar
- 1 tbsp Mayonnaise
Then what I love so much about this salad is the simplicity. No major fillers. No cheese. Just lettuce, tomato and red onion. You honestly don’t need anything else.
Salad:
- 1 Head of Iceberg Lettuce
- 1 Large Tomato
- 1/3 Red Onion, Sliced

Step by Step How to Make this Simple Old School Salad with Creamy Vinaigrette
Step 1
In a glass measuring cup or bowl, mix together all of the dressing ingredients. Use a small whisk or fork to make sure the mayo is really mixed in with the oil and lemon juice.
Step 2
Chop up head of lettuce, and dice tomato. Slice about 1/3 of a red onion into thin slices. Mix them together in a large salad bowl. Pour over dressing and toss the salad very will until dressing coats the entirety of the salad. Serve immediately. Enjoy!
