Discover the classic taste of this old fashioned sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, a pecan crust and frozen yam patties. Quick, simple and perfect for your holiday menu.
This is the simplest old fashioned sweet potato casserole. I do most of the cooking around my house, especially for holidays. This is a quick and simple recipe on a classic flavor. I assemble the casserole with frozen yam patties, then top with all the fixings. This comes out perfect just like grandma used to make and it takes less than 5 minutes to assemble.
I feel like I’m running like a chicken with its head cut off for holidays. I’m always trying to find a good recipe that delicious, simple and has that homemade feeling. That’s exactly what this old fashioned sweet potato casserole is.
There’s no boiling or peeling potatoes. Just place the frozen yam patties right in your dish. I promise; these come out so perfect. It’s also the best of both types of sweet potato casseroles. It has a pecan crumble and a marshmallow topping. You can’t beat it.
Questions You Might Have:
Pecan Streusel Topping or Marshmallows?
Both! I create the pecan crumble as the first layer, bake it, then top with marshmallows. It comes out so delicious.
Can I substitute something for the heavy cream?
You can. However, this recipe is already so glutenous, so why not just go all in? You can use milk or half and half.
Can I make this ahead?
I wouldn’t for this particular recipe. It’s too simple to make to begin with. Also, you’ll want to cook your yams from frozen.
Equipment You’ll Need:
For this recipe, you’ll need either a 9×9 baking dish or a 9- or 10-inch cast iron skillet. I use my skillets for everything, so, of course, that’s what I used. You’ll also need something to mix in. I like using these measuring cups. They are easy to use and can be placed in the microwave. They are perfect for melting butter.
Ingredients You’ll Need:
Frozen Yam Patties
I used a 32-ounce packet of frozen yam patties. These are by the frozen vegetables in your grocery store. I just broke them up and placed them in the dish frozen. Trust me; it comes out great.
Flour
You’ll need a half cup of flour plus a little sprinkle. You’ll dust your frozen yam patties with flour once you place them in the pan and then you’ll need a half cup for your pecan crumble.
Brown Sugar
The same as the flour. You’ll need a half cup of flour plus a little sprinkle and repeat the same process as the brown sugar.
Heavy Cream
You’ll need a cup and a half of heavy cream.
Maple Syrup
You’ll need a third of a cup of maple syrup.
Melted Butter
I melted a half stick of butter.
Chopped Pecans
You’ll need about a half cup of chopped pecans for your crumble topping.
Mini Marshmallows
I used about 2 to 3 cups of mini marshmallows for the final topping.
