Savor a southern apple cobbler with a biscuit topping—cinnamon-spiced apples and a buttery crust for a delightful treat.
Ok. This apple cobbler with biscuit topping. This is my favorite biscuit recipe on top of a brown sugar, cinnamon fried apple filling. This is so decadent and fluffy. You have to top with vanilla ice cream while it’s hot. You cannot beat this classic southern dessert.
I love this apple cobbler. You just can’t beat it. It’s so rich and simple to make. One of the reasons I love it so much is because it has my favorite biscuit topping. I’ve been making these biscuits for years and they are so delicious. They go so perfectly on top of these apples.
I’m telling y’all; this is a dessert for all year round. When I think of anything cinnamon and apple, I always think of Fall. However, this is a perfect summertime dessert as well.
Questions You Might Have:
What type of apples are best for apple cobbler?
To me, it really doesn’t matter what type of apple you use for apple cobbler. Always like gala or Fuji apples. That’s just me. Any variety will work. They are all going to cook down in the cinnamon sugar anyway.
Do I have to peel my apples?
I would definitely recommend this. If not, you may get an unpleasant texture of the skin once it all bakes down. Just makes for a smoother, more delicious bite.
Can I substitute something for the Crisco?
Yes. I understand that it’s not for everyone. I would a half stick of very softened butter instead.
Apple cobbler vs apple crisp?
This recipe is for an apple cobbler. This is a cinnamon sugar apple base with a flour, biscuit-like topping. An apple crisp recipe is very similar, but the topping is predominantly made with oats.
Equipment You’ll Need
As for equipment, you’ll start with a vegetable peeler to peel your apples with. You could leave the rind on, but it’ll make for a tougher and chewy textured filling. You’ll then need a skillet to fry your apples and bake the cobbler in. I used a 10-inch cast iron.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Apples:
You’ll need 6 to 8 of your apples of choice. I like gala apples, but it’s up to you. You can also do a mix!
Lemon Juice:
This will just help cut down on the tartness of the apples.
Butter:
You’ll need a few tablespoons of butter for your apple filling.
Sugars:
You’ll need a cup of brown sugar for the apple filling. You’ll also need a half cup of granulated sugar to go in your biscuit dough.
Cornstarch:
This will just help thicken up your apple filling.
Milk:
You’ll need a cup of milk to go in your biscuit dough.
Flour and Baking Soda:
You’ll need two cups of flour and a dash of baking soda for your biscuits.
Crisco or Shortening:
I used two tablespoons of Crisco. This is just an old tried and true biscuit recipe I’ve been making for years. If you don’t want to use the shortening, substitute it for a half stick of softened butter.
Can you make ahead or freeze this recipe?
You can make this recipe ahead. I would bake this recipe completely, then freeze it. It can store in the freezer for up to three or so months. Breads and biscuits freeze very well. You may just need to thaw it out and warm it up in the oven again on 325 for about 15-20 minutes.
What to serve with apple cobbler?
Honestly, there is nothing better than eating hot apple cobbler with a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Extra points if you’re eating it with homemade vanilla ice cream. However, it’s super good solo, but you can also top it with whipped cream or even a caramel sauce.
