Why You’ll Love This Chicken in Gravy Recipe
It Takes so few ingredients
There’s so few ingredients that go into making this chicken breast in gravy recipe. Most of which, you’ll probably already have at home in your refrigerator or pantry.
It’s easy
This recipe is so simple. It’s literally just cooking your chicken in the skillet, taking them out and mixing up your gravy then putting the back in. It’s that simple.
It’s the perfect comfort meal
For some reason, this recipe just reminds me of something that my Granny would make. Serve it with rice or mashed potatoes and some green beans for the perfect country-style meal.
Equipment You Will Need
You won’t need a lot of equipment for this recipe. I used my 7-quart cast iron Dutch oven. You could use a smaller one, but I just felt like this worked with the gravy. You could also use a regular Dutch oven. However, you may not get as much as a char on the outer sides of your chicken.
I used a chicken knife to cut my breasts into strips. I also used my meat tenderizer to beat the chicken just a tad. This step is optional, but I like doing it. I feel like the chicken cooks better after tenderizing it.
Ingredients You Will Need
Chicken Breasts:
I used 3 pounds of chicken breasts. I then cut them into strips about 2 inches wide. I tenderize them just a little bit, but that’s totally optional. I feel like it gives the chicken a better texture and flavor.
Seasonings:
I used salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder.
Olive Oil:
You’ll need to put a little bit of oil in the bottom of the skillet to keep the chicken from sticking.
Heavy Cream:
Once your chicken is cooked and ready, remove it from the pan and then add in your heavy cream. This will be the base of the gravy.
Flour:
You’ll add in your flour a tablespoon at a time, constantly stirring. It will then thicken into the gravy.
Sugar:
I like to put a tiny teaspoon of sugar. I feel like it balances out the salty chicken flavors.
Step by Step How to Make this Smothered Chicken in Gravy Recipe
Step one
Take your chicken breasts and cut them into strips about two inches wide. Tenderize them if you would like, but this step is optional. Season both sides of them with your salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder.
Step two
Turn on your burner to medium to high heat under your skillet. Add in about a tablespoon or two of oil to keep the chicken from sticking. Add on your chicken to the skillet one at a time. Don’t let them touch each other. Cook them, rotating sides, until the temperature is over 165 degrees. Then, remove them from the skillet.
Step three
Once all the chicken is cooked and removed, turn the burner to medium to low heat. Add in your heavy cream and stir, getting the seasonings from the bottom of the skillet mixed in the cream. Add in your sugar then your flour one tablespoon at a time, constantly stirring. I used about two tablespoons until I got the perfect gravy consistency.
Step four
Turn the heat to low then add your chicken back into the gravy. Let them simmer in the gravy for around 5 to 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
