These Louisiana boudin egg rolls with pepper jack cheese are so amazingly delicious. Ok. This is kind of a cheat recipe. I used storebought boudin sausage and removed it from the casing. I added in few other things to bring it all together with some shredded pepper jack cheese, folded them up and fried. These have that perfect Louisiana boudin taste added with the cheesy pepper jack. I’m telling you; these cannot be beat.
What is boudin?
Ok. We eat a lot of boudin (boo-dan) around here. It’s a sausage made of different parts of pork meat with peppers, onions, celery and rice stuffed into pork casing. It’s basically rice sausage. It’s really good if you’ve never tried it.
You can buy boudin literally anywhere in Louisiana, so I took a shortcut with this recipe. I bought premade boudin, took the stuffing out, and THEN made the egg rolls with some pepper jack. Allen and I made a meal out of these. They are so good. Serve them as a meal, appetizer, at a tailgate. These are perfect anytime, anywhere!
Equipment You’ll Need
The equipment you’ll need is a large Dutch oven or a fryer. I personally like to fry in a cast iron Dutch oven. This is the exact one I have. You’ll also need some tongs and a small mixing bowl.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Egg Roll Wrappers:
You’ll need a package of egg roll wrappers. I think I used maybe 8 to 10 in total?
Boudin:
I used about 12 ounces in total.
Chicken Broth:
You’ll need a half a cup of chicken broth.
Pepper Jack Cheese:
You’ll need one cup of shredded pepper jack cheese.
How to Make These Louisiana Boudin Egg Rolls
Step one:
Add about two quarts of oil to a large Dutch oven. You want it to be at least 4-5 inches of oil deep. Heat the oil to 350 degrees.
Step two:
Remove the boudin filling from the outer casing and place it in a bowl. Add in your broth and cheese and mix well.
Step three:
Add a small bit of water to a small bowl. Place an egg roll wrapper on a flat surface with a point at the top. Gently wet all edges of the wrapper with water then fill the center with about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons of filling.
Step four:
Fold the top corner down first over the filling. Then fold both side corners inward then twist downward until the egg roll forms. The water should make it hold together. Repeat until you’ve used all the filling.
Step five:
Add the egg rolls to the grease about 3 to 4 at a time. Cook for about 6 minutes each until they are nice and golden brown. You’ll want to rotate them while they are cooking. Remove from oil and place on a paper towel to absorb the grease. Serve with ranch or preferred dipping sauce and enjoy!
