Meat Lovers Pizza Pot Pie

I love this pizza pot pie. If you love meat lovers’ pizza, then you will love everything about this. It’s just that, only baked into a deep skillet. The crust is actually crispy and buttery, with the yummy insides of a typical pizza. For this particular recipe, I made “meat lovers” style. It’s got Italian sausage, pepperoni, and cheeses. Can’t go wrong with all the meats. However, anything goes with this recipe! It’s fun and super easy to make for a quick dinner. Plus, clean-up is a breeze!
Ok. If you’ve read any of my prior posts, as much as I like cooking a really hard recipe that takes all day and has many steps, I equally love figuring out quick and easy recipes for weeknight meals. I’m really drained in the evening and most night my house is like a zoo. This pizza pot pie will fill up all the hungry men in my life, and it doesn’t mess up the kitchen.
I used meat lovers’ pizza toppings as my filling, but you can use whatever typical pizza toppings you want.
Equipment You Will Need
So, the main thing that you’ll need is a cast iron. I know I harp on these all the time, but I literally have one in every shape and size. They are so worth it, and honestly pretty reasonable to buy. Walmart has a great selection. The reason why I say that in particular for this recipe is because the cast iron will create a crispy crust on the bottom of your pot pie. You can use just a regular dish, but the bottom may not turn out as good.
Ingredients You Will Need
I cut a lot of corners with this recipe. I used store-bought pizza crust dough and pizza sauce. It’s good and time saving! I also used a pound of Italian sausage, some sliced pepperoni and mozzarella cheese. There’s really not an exact amount of the sauce, cheese and pepperonis to use. Just until your pan gets full.
Ok. So, I love meat lovers’ pizza. But Allen really likes meat lovers’ pizza. However, you can pretty much use this same recipe or concept and fill your skillet up with any ingredients you’d like. There’s not just one way to make this pizza pot pie.
How to Make a Pizza Pot Pie
Step one:
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Spray your cast iron skillet with cooking spray and stretch and lay out your first crust. Poke holes in the bottom with a fork.
Step two:
In a separate skillet, you’ll brown your ground Italian sausage until fully cooked. Drain off the grease completely. You can even pat it with a paper towel to ensure all of the grease is off as much as possible. Set aside.
Step three:
Add a layer of pizza sauce on top of your first layer of crust of your pizza pot pie. Layer repeatedly with sausage, pepperoni, and cheese. Repeat the process until the pan is full. I prefer my final top later to be cheese.
Step four:
Stretch out your second crust dough. Cut a few slits in the top. You’ll see in my pictures that I cut four little diagonal slits. You’ll then lay that layer flat on top of your pan and trim the excess of both sheets of dough. I twisted up my edges a little bit. Microwave your butter and add in your Italian seasonings to the melted butter. Brush on the top of the crust.
Step five:
Bake at 400 for around 15 minutes or until top is completely browned. The top (and the bottom if you use a cast iron) will be so nice and crunchy. Serve and enjoy!
