Bisquick Fried Chicken and Waffles with Hot Honey Syrup
This classic southern bisquick fried chicken and waffles with hot honey syrup was such a hit with my guys. Ok. That’s a long description, but every component of the recipe is so equally as important and delicious! I decided to bread the chicken with a bisquick and flour mixture. This added so much texture and flavor. The juicy “bisquick” fried chicken paired with the fluffy bisquick waffle is a perfect meal and taste combination. Top it all off with the heat from the red pepper in the hot honey syrup. Oh, my goodness. We had this for dinner, but it would be a perfect breakfast or brunch as well. Read along to see how I made this classic southern dish.
I made this chicken and waffles recipe the other night while Allen was working late. It’s corn harvest, so he’s been late quite a bit. This was actually fine with me. I had the time and space without all the guys in the house to prepare for this recipe. They are like a wild herd of cattle, and they honesty get in my way! Haha This recipe kinda has several different parts so don’t let it intimidate you! It’s actually really simple, and the chicken and waffles require a lot of the same ingredients.
Equipment You Will Need
Like I said, this recipe is a lengthy process. Not that it isn’t worth it. It just messes up a lot of kitchen equipment. For the actual cooking of the chicken and waffles, you’ll need a frying pan and a waffle iron. You’ll also need three different bowls to bread the chicken. I started with a large bowl to soak the chicken in half & half. Then, you’ll need two other separate bowls; one for your eggs and another for your bisquick flour mixture. For the waffles, you’ll also need a large bowl to mix everything in.
Ingredients You Will Need
Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts:
I used 3 large boneless skinless chicken breasts. I cute them in half through the middle of the cutlet then cute those in half as well. Each breast made 4 cutlets. I then beat them with a meat tenderizer. This made for a more tender and juicier cut of chicken.
Bisquick:
You’ll need bisquick for several obvious reasons. The waffles I made were actually just simple bisquick waffles from the box. I also used it for the breading of my chicken.
Flour:
I used one-part bisquick and one-part flour to bread my chicken before frying. So good and simple.
Seasonings:
I used a mixture of several different seasonings to go into the flour mixture for my chicken breading. I used salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, Cajun seasoning, and lemon pepper.
Half and Half:
I first used half and half to marinate my chicken in. I also used it for the milk base of my waffles. I feel like it adds a little bit better flavor than just plain milk. That’s just me…
Eggs:
You’ll need one eggs for your waffle mixture, then I used 4 eggs to dredge my chicken in before breading.
Cooking Oil:
For frying the chicken. I used a canola oil, but you can use whatever frying oil you prefer.
Maple Syrup:
For the hot honey syrup. One part honey and one part maple syrup.
Honey:
Read above ingredient. Ha.
Red Pepper Flakes:
Adds a kick to the honey syrup. So good.
Step by Step How to Make This Bisquick Fried Chicken and Waffles with Hot Honey Syrup
Step 1
Take out your 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Cut them down the center middle. Like if you turned it on its side then slice down the middle. Then cut the halves into two pieces. Tenderize each cutlet with a meat tenderizer. Place in a bowl with 2 cups of half and half. Let it marinate for at least one hour.
Step 2
Take your frying pan and add enough oil to where it is 1.5-2 inches deep. Heat the oil to medium high. Grab two more bowls. In one, add 4 eggs and beat them. In the other, add 1.5 cups of bisquick, flour and seasonings.
Step 3
Remove a cutlet from the half and half. Dip it in the flour mixture. Then, place it in the beat eggs, covering it completely. Add it to the flour mixture again, making sure it is fully coated. Add it to oil. Watch for the edges to become golden brown, then flip it over. Fry until both sides are a golden brown. Remove, and place on a paper towel excess oil.
Step 4
Mix together 2 cups Bisquick, 1 cup of half and half, two tablespoons of oil, and one egg. Beat together until fully mixed and no clots are present. Pour onto hot waffle iron. Let sit until waffle if is finished per waffle iron instructions. Repeat until batter is gone.
Step 5
Mix together syrup, honey and red pepper flakes. Mix for a few minutes with a spoon to allow the syrup to receive a peppery flavor. Assemble waffle with chicken on top. Drizzle with hot honey syrup. Enjoy!
