Southern Fried Cabbage

This southern fried cabbage recipe will make you think of your grandparents’ house…or at least it does me. It’s smoked sausage and bacon chopped and cooked down. Add in your cabbage to fry down in the all the juices and fats from your sausage and bacon. Add in some butter and seasonings and that’s it. Keep reading to see how I made this traditional, one pot side.
This is one of the ultimate southern vegetables. When I think about eating a comfort meal, I think of this as one of the sides. You just can’t beat fried cabbage. Cabbage fried in the grease and flavors of sausage and bacon. So good…
You technically could also eat this by itself. It has plenty of meat and protein in it to fill you up. Put it over some white rice with cornbread and pepper sauce!
Equipment You Will Need
You’ll need a knife to chop your meat and cabbage, a large skillet or braiser and a spoon or spatula. I really love wooden spoons and spatulas. I use them for everything.
Ingredients You Will Need
Smoked Sausage:
You’ll need about a pound of smoked sausage. I cut it up into pieces.
Bacon:
I used about 4-5 slices of bacon. I used hickory smoked bacon, but you can use whatever thickness or flavor that you’d like.
Cabbage:
You’ll need a whole head of cabbage.
Butter:
You have to have butter, right? I used about 4 tablespoons sliced into slices.
Seasonings:
You’ll need a blend of salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder and sugar.
How to Make Southern Fried Cabbage
Step One:
Chop bacon and sausage into bits. Add them to a large skillet over medium to high heat. Sauté for several minutes until sausage is browned and bacon is cooked.
Step two:
Slice and chop your head of cabbage into small bits as well. Add it to the skillet. Stir for several minutes until cabbage starts to break down. Add your seasonings and several slices of butter over the top of the cabbage.
Step three:
Keep sauteing for several minutes until cabbage is fully “fried.” Serve and enjoy!

- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 1 tsp Salt

- 1 tsp Sugar
