Beef Tips with Rice
I love this beef tips with rice recipe. It’s so easy for me to just throw in a pot in the evening time. There’s not a right or wrong way on how to cook beef tips and rice. You can make a homemade gravy or use a packet. This recipe is a little of both, and it tastes so delicious. Read along to see how I made this simple beef tips over rice.
Why Make This Rice and Beef Tips Recipe
It’s Easy
There’s really not a lot that goes into making this beef tips with rice recipe. The longest part is browning your meat.
You can use a variety of meats
There are many different cuts of meat that you can use for this recipe. It’s a common question to wonder are beef tips and stew meat the same. I used stew meat. It’s very inexpensive if you’re feeding a large crowd. However, since it’s a lower quality meat, it’ll be tougher. A chuck, rump, round roast or sirloin for more tender bit of meat.
It’s good leftover
I personally feel like these are better the next day. That’s just me.
Equipment You’ll Need
There’s not too much equipment you’ll need for this recipe. Mainly, a large pot. I used my Le Creuset 5.5 quart pot. I love it and I use it for so many things. Other than that, you’ll need another smaller pot or a rice cooker to prepare your rice in. You’ll need a cutting board, a ladle, and a wood spatula or spoon. I like one with a flat bottom so I can easily scrape the sides and bottom of the pot.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Beef:
I used stew meat for this recipe. It’s cheap and goes a long way. However, you can always use a different cut or roast, cut in to bits and it should be much more tender.
Corn Starch:
I like to coat my beef tips with my seasonings and corn starch before I sear them. This also helps with the thickness.
Brown Mushrooms:
I love mushrooms in my beef tips, but you don’t have to include them if you don’t want to!
Yellow Onion & Minced Garlic:
These add all the flavor. Add them in and sauté them until they are translucent. You’ll be able to smell them.
Red Wine (optional)
I like to add in a splash of red wine to deglaze the bottom of the pot. It will steam up and get a lot that good flavor that sticks to the bottom of your pot. This is totally optional, and will not change your overall taste.
Packets:
I used a packet of ranch seasoning mix, a packet of brown gravy mix and a packet of french onion soup mix. These three are a perfect combo together and make this dish so easy and delicious.
Beef Broth:
You’ll need 32 ounces of beef broth. You can use a low sodium option if you prefer.
Seasonings:
I always salt and pepper everything. I salt and peppered my meat before coating it in corn starch. Then add as needed once stew is coming together.
Bay Leaves:
I like adding bay leaves to a lot of my soups and stews. They add so much flavor. It could be a Louisiana thing? You don’t have to add them if you don’t have any at home and don’t normally cook with them. It’s just habit for me know. I always remove them before serving.
Rice:
Cook one part rice with two parts water. I made two cups of rice for this recipe, and it was plenty. You can always make more or less.
Step by Step How to Make These Simple Beef Tips Over Rice
Step One
Add your chopped onion, minced garlic and sliced mushrooms to a large pot or Dutch oven. Sauté on medium heat with two tablespoons of butter until onions are translucent and mushrooms are softer.
Step two
Coat your small cubes of beef in salt, pepper and cornstarch. Place them in the pot. They will start to sear and cook, and the veggies will also get a thick coating. Stir for several minutes until all meat seems to be totally browned. If you have red wine, add it to the post then scrap the seasonings off the bottom of the stock pan.
Step Three
Add in your 3 packets of mixes. Stir them until they coat the meat and veggies. Slowly add in your beef broth. Then add your bay leaves. Keep on medium heat until the stew starts to bubble and thicken. Cover and reduce heat to lowest setting.
Step four
While your tips are simmering, add 4 cups of water and two cups of white rice to a pot. Bring water to a boil, cover and reduce heat to lowest setting. Do not remove lid. It will take around 20 minutes for rice to fully cook. Uncover stew, remove bay leaves and stems, and taste. See if it needs any salt or pepper and add accordingly. Serve over the rice. Enjoy!
