Old-Fashioned Johnny Marzetti

This old-fashioned Johnny Marzetti recipe. To me, this is the epitome of old-school, one-pot, potluck dishes. This is a mix of sauteed vegetables, ground beef and egg noodles baked in a tomato sauce. This recipe came out of my Granny’s cookbook. As soon as I made it, it just took me back to their house. It actually says in the notes, “Serve with English peas and a green salad.” That’s exact what I did. So, so good.
I try to cook old-school, but then when I made this recipe, it made me realize that I really don’t. Everything was so simple, yet so delicious. I also really love nostalgic recipes, and this is exactly what this was. This took me back to eating dinner on my grandparents’ counter. I cook her recipes all the time, but this one was different. I think because it’s just a classic, everyday meal.
Equipment You Will Need
For this recipe, you’ll need a large skillet with a lid. If you don’t have one with a lid, you’ll need to cover it with foil. You’ll also need a wooden spoon or spatula to stir and sauté with and a sharp kitchen knife.
Ingredients You Will Need
Ground Beef:
You’ll need one pound of ground beef. It doesn’t matter what fat percentage you get. You’ll drain off the grease after cooking.
Bell Pepper and Onion:
You’ll need on green bell pepper and one yellow onion. You’ll chop both and sauté.
Mushrooms:
I used a whole large can of mushrooms. The mushrooms add so much flavor to this dish.
Italian Dressing Seasoning Packet:
This is the only change I made to my Granny’s recipe. Her recipe called for Oregano, and I used the packet of Italian dressing mix. Honestly, it tasted the same.
Tomato Paste, Sauce, and Soup:
You will need one can each to make your sauce.
Water:
I used a half cup to water down the red sauce. This also helps the noodles cook better, too.
Wide Egg Noodles:
I used half a bag of wide egg noodles.
Shredded Cheese:
You’ll need about two to three cups of shredded cheese. You can use cheddar or a blend. It really doesn’t matter.
