This Southern sweet potato casserole will be the most delicious dish at any holiday function. This is a sweet potato casserole with canned yams, making it super easy to throw together. Top with a brown sugar, cereal, and pecan crumble loaded with butter for the most crunchy and delicious bite every time. You’ll want to make this old fashioned sweet potato casserole for every potluck and function. It’s seriously that good.
I really love this particular sweet potato casserole recipe. For many reasons… Mainly, because it’s just old-fashioned. The yams in the center just remind me of a potluck. The brown sugar and cinnamon make it so perfectly sweet. I like the cereal in the crumble topping. It’s just something different with the same concept. The cereal is so good baked with the butter and brown sugar. Seriously. You still get that crunchy texture with the creamy center. Soooo good. You’ll want it for every single holiday.
Equipment You’ll Need
You’ll need two mixing bowls. One for your canned yams filling and the other for your cereal crumble topping. You’ll also need a casserole dish. I used a 9-inch square dish.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Canned Sweet Potato Filling:
You’ll need two large cans of yams in syrup, some brown sugar, some melted butter, and cinnamon. You’ll need to mix it all together. Save a little of the syrup in the canned yams to make your yams not as dry.
Cereal Crumble Topping:
The cereal crumble topping has Life cereal, brown sugar, and chopped pecans.
How to Make This Southern Sweet Potato Casserole
STEP ONE:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Open your cans of yams and drain all but about a half cup of syrup. Add the syrup and yams to a mixing bowl. Add in brown sugar, melted butter, cinnamon and salt. Mash and mix together until smooth and add to your casserole dish.
STEP TWO:
In a separate bowl, add your cereal, pecans, a cup of brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix together well and sprinkle over the top of your yam mixture.
STEP THREE:
Slice a half stick of butter into 1/2-inch slices and places them all over the top of your crumble. Bake for about 20 minutes. The crumble will be golden brown, and the yams will be bubbly along the edges. Serve and enjoy!
