This good, old fashioned homemade hamburger steak and gravy is the perfect comfort meal. These are pan fried hamburger patties smothered in homemade brown gravy. The gravy is made from scratch and is so simple to make. Just use your patty drippings, beef broth, flour, and a little heavy cream to make it so creamy and delicious. Serve it with rice or mashed potatoes for the ultimate southern meal.
I love hamburger steak. It’s really a southern classic comfort food. This recipe is super easy, and requires so few ingredients to make. I really love making homemade gravy. Once you’ve cooked your patties down, you’ll used that good grease and the drippings in the skillet to act as a base for your gravy. Just add some broth, flour and heavy cream. So delicious and full of flavor.
Equipment You’ll Need
For this hamburger steak recipe, you’ll need a big, old skillet. Mine that I use is a 15″ round skillet. You may not be able to fit all patties in to saute’ at once, but once they cook and shrink down, you’ll be able to. You’ll also need some measuring cups. I used both types I attached below.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Hamburger Patties:
You’ll need 8 hamburger patties. I like to buy the ones that are already pre-portioned. It’s super simple to use them.
Gravy:
For the gravy, you need the drippings in the skillet, some flour and beef broth. Once I mixed my gravy, I added a little heavy cream and sugar to really make it pop.
How to Make Hamburger Steak
Step One:
Add your seasonings together in a small bowl. Sprinkle of both sides of each patty. Turn heat to medium-high. Add patties.
Step two:
Sauté patties for several minutes on each side until they are fully cooked. Remove from the skillet and set aside on a plate. The patties should have an internal temperature of at least 145 degrees.
Step three:
Reduce heat in the skillet to medium and add in a cup of broth. Slowly sprinkle in flour and it will start to become thickened. Keep adding broth and flour, constantly stirring. You will use all four cups of broth.
Step four:
Add in your heavy cream and sugar and stir. If it’s not thick enough, keep slowly adding flour. Add your hamburger patties back to the skillet with gravy. Let simmer on low for a few minutes. Serve and enjoy!
